Volunteer

Whether you’re looking to improve your wildlife monitoring skills, get active outdoors, or meet like-minded people, we’ve got a volunteering activity to suit you. You don’t have to be an expert or have experience; you just need lots of enthusiasm.

Each of our volunteering activities contributes to protecting and enhancing the wildlife sanctuary. We’re looking for volunteers to support a number of our projects, so if you’ve got some time to give we’d love to hear from you!
Most of our volunteer work is based on the islands, but don’t worry if you don’t have your own boat, we provide return transport for our volunteers from Paihia, Russell and Rāwhiti.

Volunteer roles require varying levels of skills, experience, availability, and fitness. While some roles are seasonal, other opportunities are weekly, fortnightly or monthly. Generally, you must be over 16 for our volunteering activities.

We have several different areas of volunteering, these include:

Weedbusting

Free boat transport is provided out to the islands throughout the year to help remove weed species from the islands.

Species Monitoring

Once we have reintroduced new species onto the islands, we need to continue to monitor them for several years following their release. Throughout the year we have opportunities to assist in monitoring different species.

Planting

Every year we hold planting days out on the islands. Planting season is between May and July each year.

Advocacy & Events

We attend events throughout the year, such as the Bay of Islands Show and having our volunteers being able to engage and promote Project Island Song is fantastic.

Species Releases

Project Island Song has so far released seven rare & endangered species onto the islands with more planned for the future. Volunteers can get involved and help at the releases.
