From 1st to 12th December 2024 we were absolutely delighted to have 8 determined walkers and runners (plus one determined guide dog) take on the 12ks of Christmas challenge to raise vital funds for Project Island Song.

Thanks to the efforts of Laura, Alex, William, Tracey, Maryanne, Moana, Vinnie, and Anika, and the generosity of their many sponsors, we have smashed our fundraising target of $12,000, with the total currently sitting at over $14,500!

This is an unbelievable achievement, and we are extremely grateful to everyone who has participated in or supported this event.

If you haven’t donated yet to support our runners, it’s not too late to celebrate their mahi! Our Give a Little page is still open for now – can you help us reach $15,000?

What is the 12ks of Christmas?

The traditional 12ks of Christmas sees the participant build up a km of walking or running for 12 days straight. So, on day one you complete 1km, day two you complete 2km, building up to the final day where you complete 12km.

For many of our participants, this wasn’t nearly hard enough, leading them to instead complete 12km each day, for 12 days straight, for an epic 144km in total.

As you can see from the photos, our runners and walkers had a fantastic time, teaming up or bumping into each other for mutual encouragement, with many friends and supporters joining them along the way for parts of the challenge.

Neither hot sun or serious rain deterred our brave participants, with runs and walks taking place across Russell, Kerikeri, Urupukapuka, Whangārei, Auckland, Taupō, and more, as our team made sure to fit in their daily kms around their busy festive schedules!

The 12ks of Christmas in numbers
  • 8 human participants
  • 1 guide dog participant
  • A total of 1086km completed (plus 144 dog kms)
  • 16 tired human legs, 4 tired dog legs
  • Dozens of supporters walking or running alongside the participants
  • 10s of thousands of calories burnt
  • Hundreds of hours of time volunteered
  • And over $14,500 raised for Project Island Song!
How will these funds help?

Raising funds for our work is always challenging, but is only getting harder with many grant funds disappearing or seriously overstretched at the moment.

The funds raised through the 12ks of Christmas will contribute to numerous essential parts of Project Island Song next year, including:

  • Dogs aren’t just for Christmas – Every month, highly-trained conservation dogs scour the islands for any signs of rats, mice, stoats, and more, to ensure any pest incursions are detected and dealt with swiftly. This work is vital for maintaining the pest-free environment on the islands and protecting our threatened wildlife.
  • Removing the naughty and keeping the nice – Our volunteer weedbusters are key to keeping the naughty weeds at bay to ensure the nice native habitats thrive for our wildlife on the islands. This support will ensure we can get our incredible weedbusters out to the islands on a regular basis.
  • Rockin’ around with native trees – Each winter our volunteers continue the revegetation of Ipipiri, planting native trees into areas of former pasture, to restore the habitat for our wildlife and increase the biodiversity of the ecosystem.

Huge thanks to everyone who supported this event!
