In well-deserved recognition of his dedication and community spirit, William Fuller was awarded the King’s Service Medal (KSM) in the New Years Honours for 2026. On 14 April, he was presented with his medal by the Governor General in a ceremony at Government House in Auckland. This honour recognises individuals who have made significant voluntary contributions to their communities or demonstrated outstanding public service. William’s mahi over the years is a shining example of both.

William has consistently given his time and energy to initiatives that strengthen the Russell/Kororāreka community. Through his roles as Principal of Russell School, Chair of Guardians of the Bay of Islands/Project Island Song, and his involvement with the Bay of Islands Walkways Trust, Te Araroa Trust, and Russell Landcare, his impact has been both meaningful and enduring.

What sets William (known to many as Mr Fuller) apart is not just the breadth of his service, but the sincerity behind it. Those who have worked alongside him speak of his determination, forward approach, and genuine care for others and for te taiao (the natural world). His KSM recognition reflects a commitment to showing up when it matters and highlights the importance of grassroots contributions in building a resilient, connected community.

The Guardians and wider Project Island Song team extend their heartfelt thanks to William for his contributions. His practical fundraising efforts, from selling annual calendars to the 12kms of Christmas events, have made a real difference. Equally significant is his focus on future generations through education and his passion for restoring natural ecosystems and preserving Northland’s heritage.

William is a valued member of the Project and the wider community. We are incredibly proud to see his mahi recognised.

Congratulations, William (Mr Fuller) – you are an inspiration to us all.
